Tunnel engineering

The wide range of tunnel-engineering solutions provided by Ramboll are increasingly valuable, as tunnels are used to connect more people and places. Our areas of expertise include urban metro systems, railway, and road tunnels - we are currently working on the Fehmarnbelt immersed tunnel project, a fixed and permanent link between Scandinavia and Central Europe. We also work on engineering tunnels at a smaller scale, such as those designed for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as for all kinds of utility systems.

Our tunnel expertise

Ramboll undertakes all project phases for tunnels, such as feasibility studies, conceptual design, preliminary design, detailed design, tendering and contract, supervision and operation & maintenance.

The services can include the initial investigations of geological and environmental conditions at a tunnel site, followed by rock mechanical calculations and a resulting initial tunnel design.  Ventilation designs for inside tunnels can be undertaken, as well fire safety designs and the installation of mechanical and electrical components.  Ramboll can undertake careful supervision of an entire tunnel engineering project, including the management of operations and maintenance, and routine or periodic tunnel inspections using Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.

Ramboll provides high standard, multidisciplinary solutions for all types of underground structures. Furthermore, we are experienced in special disciplines, such as tunnelling under and close to existing structures, permanent diaphragm walls, top-down methods, etc. The preliminary investigations involve a range of different disciplines; frequently, a thorough preliminary investigation is key to a successful project. Our tunnel engineering work covers investigation, preconstruction, and construction phase investigations. These stages include primary site exploration, detailed surface investigations, detailed sub-surface investigations, and tunnel mapping.
