Facade engineering

Our Facades team has expert knowledge of the increasingly complex methods and techniques available and understands the implications of different façade solutions in terms of geometry, structural adequacy, performance, energy efficiency, procurement, program, and whole life costing.

Members of our Facades team combine experience from Architectural, Structural Engineering and High-rise Façade Construction fields. Through the Façade Engineering team we can design an elegant, fully integrated building envelope: a major element that often accounts for over 25% of the construction budget.

Our skills

We assist Developers, Architects and Contractors and drive efficiency gains by constantly appraising and incorporating the most optimal design, latest research and most suitable technology.

Our Middle East team specializes in:

  • High rise design
  • Climate adaptive design (Cold and Hot climate)
  • International codes
  • Advice on international suppliers and procurement routes

Our services

Our façade engineering consultancy covers the following areas:

  • Material selection
  • System design, system concept
  • Structural design
  • Building physics
  • Development of new systems
  • Specifications and tender drawings
  • Independent advice on suppliers and contractors
  • Factory inspections
  • Tendering
  • Testing
  • Document review and approval
  • Site inspections
  • System design to contractors
  • Failure investigation

We provide design and consultancy for the entire building envelope, including:

  • Curtain Wall
  • Glass feature walls
  • Glazed skylights
  • Stone cladding
  • Metal cladding
  • GRC and pre-cast
  • FRP cladding or features

BMU consultancy

We also offer BMU consultancy, as we believe keeping the facades clean and accessing it for maintenance is part of the success. Our team develops safe access strategies to high-rise building facades, even to complex geometry surfaces and specifies the required machinery and equipment.

Scope of services for façade access and maintenance (BMU) consultancy:

  • Access strategy advice
  • Cleaning cycle
  • Gantries
  • Roof machines
  • Robotic façade cleaning
  • BMU Equipment selection
  • Direct access methods
  • Safety review
  • Testing
  • Installation inspection

Ramboll’s sustainability, fire and façades experts found a solution, preserving the specific architectural features while also achieving a LEED Gold Rating. As a result, the building will use 20-25% less energy than other similar buildings.

Landmark Tower

A new mixed-use development designed in the shape of a billowing sail and standing at the apex of the Maritime City’s headland location.  Keeping out solar heat was essential for the design of the Landmark Tower, the tallest proposed tower in Dubai Maritime City at 229m.

Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre

Citadel Capital Office Complex

The showpiece of Cairo's Smart Village, this pair of identical buildings by Zaha Hadid resemble cut diamonds. Inclined facades and complex detailing make this pair of identical buildings a welcome challenge for our facade engineers. Each building consists of three office sections connected only by bridges. The central lobby area is topped by a star shaped skylight roof. The steelwork of this roof is designed to allow differential movements of the three blocks.

Design to drive technology

Our facade engineers worked closely with digital printing companies to create a printed interlayer to be laminated within the glass. The interlayer contains a white or blue pattern that changes in density across the facades in line with the architectural intent. While the exterior of the glass shows an unusual pattern, the interior view is transparent and homogenous, with uniform glare control.

Rationalizing the high aesthetic requirements

Our facade engineers developed innovative and aesthetical details for Zaha Hadid Architects, while still maintaining a practical approach to the facade. The extreme inclined facades required rationalization to be cost-effective, and our team was up to the challenge. The team worked closely with the architects designing with 3D modeling on the complex geometry.

The unique appearance of The Opus in Business Bay, Dubai, UAE derives from an unusual source of inspiration: the architect sank a hot poker into a cube of ice to create an irregular, curved void.

The Opus

This Zaha Hadid design has tested our engineers’ skills unlike any other. In the constant search for original designs that truly push the limits, many building projects in the Middle East are in fact driving innovation in engineering design.

Ramboll’s engineers designed two façades within a tight schedule and to exacting specifications.

Yas Rotana and Centro Hotels

Ramboll’s engineers designed two façades within a tight schedule and to exacting specifications. Our engineers worked on the project from June 2007, assisting the architect with fast track system design, specifications, façade details, and overseeing the contractor’s work on site, until the final inspection in November 2009.
