Mining

The mining industry is developing rapidly - particulary in the northern and arctic areas. Throughout a mine's lifetime, it is essential to minimise and manage negative social and environmental impacts that may arise - with regard to both local and global interests and stakeholders.

Cost-effectiveness, environmental, and social sustainability are all important goals to achive, and as a partner for the mining industry, from the exploration stage to mine closure and land restoration, we are able to build a bridge between the project, the authorities, and the local community.

A sustainable approach to mine waste disposal

Effective management of waste is a major safety issue and important to minimize the environmental impact. Over the last decade, the development of Paste Technology has been part of the mine waste solution. It enables waste materials to be disposed of in slopes rather than dams. Further, it minimizes issues such as water and soil contamination as well as any impacts on neighbouring population are minimised. The Ramboll Foundation, Ramboll in Sweden, Finland and Norway together with Norrbotten County Research Council and the Luleå University of Technology are conducting a research project within paste technology.

Zoning and EIA for Bidedjoàggi gold and copper mines in Kautokeino

Since early 2011, Ramboll has been working with Arctic Gold AB to develop a program for zoning and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The program is an elaborate plan involving all concerned parties and sector authorities, and is to be completed by the first quarter of 2013. The Biedjovággi mine was once an active mining area for copper and gold. The plan is to re-open the mine in 2015, and double the size of the existing site. The company has initiated a drilling program with the goal of doubling the mineral resources.
