Copenhagen: Carbon neutral by 2025

Ramboll was commissioned to conduct feasability studies regarding the target of a carbon neutral Copenhagen by 2025. This vision was formed at the UN Climate Conference in December 2009 (COP 15) that provided a unique display window for Danish climate solutions and sustainable initiatives. The result was the report Copenhagen carbon neutral 2025, which called for innovative thinking in relation to Copenhagen’s possibilities of having an impact on energy consumption and supply in all of the city’s sectors – from the production of heat and electricity based on renewable energy sources to the citizens’ use of electrical appliances, means of transportation etc. in an energy efficient way.

Towards C02 neutral heating

Whether the power is generated from burning waste or the combustion of other energy sources, new research suggests that district heating holds the answer to one of the greatest challenges of our times: finding a CO2-neutral urban heating system. Today, 60% of Danish homes are supplied with heat through district heating and this covers 50% of the country's general demand. Scientific research projects carried out by Ramboll and Aarhus University have investigated the potential for district heating to play an integral part in realising a Danish society heated 100% by renewable energy in future.
